First of all...

This is my first English blog~ ^^;;
SO! first of all I wanna have lots of fun with it~ hahaha

I want to discuss about "Plastic Surgery" here!
Because it is one of the big issue in Korea nowadays and i've got some interests with it!
Different people have different reasons for plastic surgery and some people would say ok for it but somes not.

What do you think??

Hi there Hannah,

Man, this IS an interesting topic. At my age (!) I might just look into "having some work done" myself. Hope u have good news as far as side-effects are concerned.

Yes, well, it's not something I thought about at 19... but as time goes on...

Hey, do Korean guys go there or is it only the gals? Coz I wonder how gendered the thing is in Asia, compared to western countries.

And also, is it used in Korea more to complement traditional (Asian) ideas of beauty, or have Koreans bought more into western ideals of what being beautiful is?

wow, i am quite surprised to see these comments! i mean i always hear stories about teenagers and plactic surgery (only for beauty), so many that somehow i thought it was teenagers were the main target in this business (are they?)

many girls in thailand, during their high school, are having plastic surgery. most of them, i heard, do not like their oriental nose and want to make it look more like the westerner's nose.

my friend told me the trend of having plastic surgery is much stronger in korea. some parents even give their daughters an amount of money when they reach certain age to do the surgery. is it true?

ps sorry, i'm not taking this paper but i just wanna join in :P

Paul~ first of all, the plastic surgery is not gals thing anymore in Korea...! Until few years ago it was just popular among gals to make them to look more pretty and beautiful. But not now..
Some boys also have lots of interest in it and there is one famous man singer who recently had a plastic surgery. I'm not sure where he did but it would be a nose and eyes...cause done for a nose and eyes are so common in Korea now. But I much prefer the way he looked before...
And one of the reasons why they do it is the idea of the ideal beauty has changed a lot. People wanna have more westernized looking - like high nose, big eyes etc. So some people in Korea say that lots of gals look so same todays and maybe 10 years later it will be hard to find who look like real Korean or Asian. Pretty sad...huh?!

Hi Jean~ good to see u in here~!! ^^
I think the teenagers’ surgery aspect is very problematic. I also have some friends who had a nose and eyes done when they were at middle school. Because they told me that if u do it when u are young it is bit harder to notice when u get older. And I think…some of my friends worked quite well hahaha it’s really hard to figure it out they done it or not. (but just for some! ) And nowadays the parents in Korea, they are getting generous about the plastic surgery but just for some of the parents. Still there are lots of parents who against for their children having plastic or cosmetic surgery. However there are also some moms who go with their daughters to make some changes ^^;;

hi Hannah,

after reading your comment, i started to feel that thailand in a few years to come may look similar to what korea is right now. i'm not saying i'm against the idea of having a plastic surgery merely for beauty, but i, for one, am not gonna go through all the process just for it.

i've read an article last semester about a thai girl here who is addicted to surgery. she has done it three times already. yeah, flying back to thailand especially to have a surgery (because it's much cheaper than here). I wonder if it becomes some kinda trend among teenagers, will there be negative effects on them? Apart from money issue, are there health problems caused by plastic surgery itself? (well, i'm just wondering out loud so you don't really have to find an answer for me if you're busy)

and what about some problem like the eating disorder that follows the girls-need-to-be-skinny trend? it won't happen directly because of the plastic surgery but if it's a trend, it means people (or some people) value it, right? if time comes when people look at the mirror and seriously lose their self-esteem just because they are not good-looking, what will it be?

a few years ago i read a comic about a girl who thinks she is ugly. yeah, she has a surgery and she can't stop it. people say she becomes more beautiful, but she's not satisfied with her own reflection in a mirror. she has more and more surgery and at last tries to do it by herself at home because she's obsessed with it but doesn't have money anymore. the end is pretty scary. i mean her wounds, blood, swollen face that is hardly recognised a human's face.

you may say it's only comic but now we've anorexia and bulimia which do kill people, and who know what comes next?

sorry, i didn't mean to type that long. (actually i don't really know what you've to do with this blog) it's an interesting topic so i wanna share my opinion with you and also others who come to this blog.

by the way, i've a 3000-word essay to hand in on friday, what am i doing here? :'(

Thanx Hannah for setting me straight (though if eyes and nose were the only worry, I'd be putting the cash aside for a rainy day), and Jean, commenting on other papers' blogs has gotta be worth something, even if its not 'on task'. :)

Gd lck for yer essay. hehe

thanks, Paul :) i'm having fun here (too much fun that i started to wonder if i talk too much)and was just complaining a bit cuz i was
supposed to be working on my essay.

by the way, i've just finished my new literature essay but i'm not sure i understood the question and answered it correctly. anyway, i think i'll ask you to have a look at it if you have time when we have a computer lab this wednesday :D

i think it's quite understandable (not that i appreciate the idea) that they want to look more like westerners. it's the same thing that asian people use the 'whitening cream' to lighten their skin colour while, on the other side of the world, the 'whites' are trying to be tan. i guess we can never be satisfied with the way we are, can we?

does parents actually want their children to "improve" their looks?
i guess there is more pressure in korea, different ideal wasn't that what both u and jean were mentioning?
i know that a friend of Ann (my flatmate) she's tiny, very skinny and gorgeous, a size 4 or 6, and she said she's ashamed everytime she goes back to india, because her friends and family over there would call her fat:O

In Norway it is very different, there's very little discussion even when it comes to plastic surgery, even though dieting is on the rising. i think they've said that about 30% or something of the population is on a diet.. or something, it's not exact numbers of course, but you know what i mean hehe..
looking forward to read more of your blog eventually.

hello, an interesting topic!! The plastic surgery is not as common as Korea in Japan but we got what we call "puchi-seikei", meaning mini-sergery. Here, girls can get their face altered that last about 2 to 3 years, I think. Anyway, it will be interesting to see what other people have said about it. Let's debate!!

Jean~ I like your commnets. You've got lots of ideas about it~ hahaha

I really understand what you mean as "obsession" which can bring very extreme results.

As I mentioned in my article some of my friends are bit doing it regularly even though they look perfect pretty.
They think they still have lots of place to change!!
Then what about me??~!!! --;;

Sometimes they asked me to do it together and really considered a bit but i'm too scared of any surgeries hahaha

hanna said...

Hey ida~
i understand what you mean ^^;;
In Korea the looking and appearance is pretty important element for everything.
So that's why some parents pretty easily do allow their children's surgery and support them.
But it's only for once or twice.

And there are some mothers who wanna do it together with their daughter~

Funny? huh~

Hi Yoshie~ ^^*
Thanks for your comments.

Actually in Korea we also do have that "mini-surgery" which lasts for few month and somes are for a year.
It's pretty quick, cheaper and easy to do it so more and more people done it during their lunch time hahaha.

It is interesting that you say that in Korea people want there nose or eyes done. Cause here in NZ it is more the boobs or lipo. And then when i lived in the Philippines the big thing was whitening treatments.
The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence aye?
Nah i am happy with my sagging two child body. Now if they could somehow have injection of energy surgery i am so there.
